Clearing Your Sinuses and Your Mind

by Maria Tabone December 15, 2014

Here we are again in cold and flu season. In addition to this many people suffer from sinus problems and some are chronic. The ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda offers great relief for all of your sinus problems. Ayurveda believes that your sinuses have great significance. Emotions are stored in the sinuses and when you cleanse the sinuses your brain is better able to focus and memory is clearer. One of the ways Ayurveda deals with chronic sinus problems, nasal irritation and sinus infections is by using what is called a neti pot. It is a nasal irrigation method developed in India. The neti pot is a ceramic pot that looks like a tea pot. Ancient yogis believe that the nasal passages should always be clear so you can think clearly to develop a higher state of consciousness. It also helps with problems associated with sinuses such as headaches, coughs and congestion.

To use the neti pot you will need to mix ¼ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water that you place in the neti pot; then pour in one nostril and let it come out the other nostril. Some can get in your throat but that is fine. You can use it two to three times a day for relief from a cold, sinus infections or allergies. Its non-invasive, works great and you will feel relief immediately.

The lesser known method that most people have not heard about is nasya. Nasya entails putting an herbal oil into the nasal passages and inhaling through the nose. This should always follow using a neti pot. Since the neti solution of salt water can dry out the passages, naysa should always be administered after the neti pot since the oil lubricates the nasal passages. The herbs are medicinal, so in addition to cleansing, it also helps protect against virus and bacteria. It’s simple to administer as you just put a few drops of nasya oil in your nostrils, sniff and massage both sides of your nose.

Once you try it you will be hooked!
