Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic treatment for calming the mind. It consists of pouring warm oil on the forehead, which then goes into the scalp and creates a deep sense of relaxation in the mind and nervous system. This enables self-healing by bringing the body and mind into balance. It is extremely effective for eliminating stress, regulating the mood, and releasing stored emotions, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, allergies, neck pain, arthritis, and stiffness.
Abhyanga is a classical Ayurvedic treatment for pacifying Vata (dryness, anxiety). It is a gentle massage; the focus being to apply warm oil to the whole body, with particular attention paid to the marma points (similar to acupressure points) to balance the energy in the body. Abhyanga has been used for thousands of years in India to help maintain overall health and increase longevity. It lubricates and increases flexibility of the muscles, tissues, and joints and helps to achieve a restful night’s sleep.
During the session both are combined for a true calming experience that is beneficial for mind and body.
Please wear clothing that you don't mind if it gets oily, and bring something to wrap your hair and head in after (which will be full of oil). It's best to leave the oil in overnight, if possible (you can put an old towel over your pillow and keep your hair wrapped). Plan to have a relaxing day or evening at home after this powerful treatment and drink plenty of warm water after.
