Aging…..New Beginnings!
Are you tired of hearing the word anti-aging?
It makes aging sound like catching a bad virus. Why has aging become a dirty word? So many products and gimmicks are on the market, with someone constantly trying to sell you something to look younger. I’ve been sucked into that too. I don’t judge anyone who chooses to try things that help them look and feel better, even plastic surgery. That is a personal decision. You should do what makes you feel good. My concern is that we aren’t respected for the wisdom and experience a long life has to offer. Try getting a job if you are over 50…not easy. This can lead to shame, embarrassment, and loss of relevance or purpose, which can lead to depression and anxiety.
You might be asking why a nutritionist and health coach is discussing aging. In coaching, we use what is called a wheel of health. The wheel encompasses all aspects of our health. The different stages of our lives contribute to our emotional and mental well-being, fulfillment, and purpose, so we need to consider all these aspects for a fulfilling life…because It's inevitable.. we will age, and guess what? That’s OK, and to take it one step further, how wonderful. What is the opposite of aging? Pushing up daisies! We all know people who haven’t been afforded that gift. My father died at 54, and my mother at 68. They would have traded their short lives for a few wrinkles. Our later years are also a time of resilience for those dealing with health issues at this point in their life. As we look forward to retirement, we must recognize that this life stage comes with challenges, including the possibility of health issues. While many of us may face illnesses as we age, preparing for this reality can help us maintain a good quality of life. By focusing on health and wellness, staying active, and planning for medical care, we can better enjoy our retirement years and handle any health concerns that may arise with confidence and grace.
My message to those of you starting a career and family, no one prepares you for retirement or getting older and it feels like a long way off. However, it comes quicker than you think, and I want to offer some simple but essential advice…prepare for how you want to spend your time during those golden years and save money. That is a significant factor in retirement. Retiring is not the end; it’s the beginning of another chapter, and without a plan and preparation, these years can be, for some, filled with regret, and you will lose out on this extraordinary time in life, so put aside some time to plan for it as you would a vacation.
There is a beautiful freedom to do whatever you want in retirement. If you want to go back to school, learn a new language, or learn an instrument, do it. Also important is to foster a sense of community, surround yourself with people you love, and stay active and engaged! It’s good for your brain and your heart. I will leave you with some words of gratitude. I just turned 61, I’m healthy, have wonderful family and friends, and am passionate about sharing my knowledge with you.
So onward and upwards, my friends, and enjoy the ride!
